In what will become a historic moment for Muay Thai in the state of Pennsylvania, GFC President; Ryan Gruhn gets elbows/”advanced rules” approved for PA.

“We’ve been working with the PA Athletic Commission and Greg Sirb for all of our events and we have been heard loud and clear when it comes to the need for advanced rules in PA.” said Ryan Gruhn Wednesday morning.

“The PA Commission feels these Muay Thai rules will be conducted similar to the MMA Advanced rules and should further grow the amateur Muay Thai sport in PA and give the PA licensed our athletes a middle step between amateur and pro.” said Greg Sirb on Wednesday morning.

GFC 5 which is set to take place on November 20th in State College, PA at the Ramada Hotel & Conference Center will be one of the first events to have advanced Muay Thai rules in the state.  Advanced rules will be for fighters with 3+ fights who agree upon the rules and additional use of elbows.

“We have fighters with ten, twenty, even more fights who compete in GFC.  The jump from amateur to pro in Muay Thai is huge.  You go from not being able to elbow or knee the head, to being able to and also shedding all padding except for the gloves.” Gruhn said.

The advanced rules will allow for all elbows with elbow pads except the “12-6 elbow” and advanced rules will shed the shin pads.  Head gear will still be mandatory for advanced Muay Thai rules.  Fights will be three, three minute rounds.

“This is a huge step in the right direction.” GFC General Manager Elise Pone said.  Pone herself is a professional MMA fighter and A Class Muay Thai fighter.  With 20+ fights herself and being a 6x Muay Thai Champion, she has experience fighting with elbows and advanced/pro rules.

“Being able to fight with elbows at the amateur level is imperative to the growth of an athlete.  Fighters used to have to go out of the state to get the experience, now they can fight right here in PA and with GFC to learn how to compete with elbows before they go pro.” Pone said.

Kellie Marin, GFC’s current Female 125 pound Champion is excited for November 20th.  She’ll be defending her title against currently undefeated fighter; Gianna Vadino.

“I’m excited to defend my title GFC title this November! The event is always top-notch and professional and the prospect that PA will allow elbows means we can showcase a true Muay Thai fight!” Marin said.

November 20th is sure to be an exciting night of fights.  “We have 12 bouts planned for the event.” Gruhn said.
