Father and Son Make History in GFC:

Liam Carlin Wins Amateur Muay Thai Debut on Father’s Day

Liam Carlin had a memorable debut in amateur Muay Thai at the Grappling & Fighting Championships (GFC) in State College, PA. What made the night special was not just his victory by unanimous decision, but the rare Father’s Day celebration with his father Shane Carlin, who coached him throughout the fight.

Liam wore the same robe that his father wore when I fought for US Muay Thai Academy, and also wore their original trainer; Kru Ood’s monkol (ceremonial head band).

GFC, sanctioned by the PA Athletic Commission and led by President Ryan Gruhn and Matchmaker Elise Pone, hosted a unique event where father and son participated together in Muay Thai. Liam, making his amateur debut, carried the weight of family legacy and personal ambition. His father, Shane Carlin, an experienced Muay Thai practitioner, coached him through the fight.

The crowd witnessed Liam’s technical skill and determination, honed under his father’s guidance. His victory marked a significant milestone in his career and a meaningful Father’s Day for the Carlin family.

Reflecting on the event, Liam shared, “My father has been my best friend and mentor for my whole life. To have him train me for a Muay Thai fight and then win that fight on Father’s Day with him in my corner, is the ultimate experience for us to share.”

For Shane Carlin, coaching his son on Father’s Day was a proud moment that highlighted their strong bond and shared passion for Muay Thai. He remarked, “Liam had to overcome a lot to prepare for this fight. His victory was not just about winning but setting an example for our program’s students. Being there to witness his accomplishment on Father’s Day was incredibly satisfying as a father.”

This Father’s Day event at GFC underscored the deep connections that combat sports can foster within families. Liam Carlin’s journey in Muay Thai promises more success, fueled by the support and guidance of his father. For Shane Carlin, it was a day of pride in his son’s achievement and the realization of a shared dream in the Muay Thai ring.

The Carlin duo’s experience at GFC on Father’s Day will be remembered for its heartfelt significance, showcasing the power of familial bonds and sportsmanship in amateur Muay Thai.
